What Exactly Is Italian Hangover Cake?
The hangover cake is one of the most popular desserts at New York’s legendary DeFazio’s Pizzeria.
While the original recipe is a closely guarded secret, it is based on a typical Italian bundt cake (ciambellone), but their alcoholic orange cake version includes a blend of Vodka, Grand Marnier, Disaronno, and orange juice.
There are a lot of classic Italian cakes that feature Grand Marnier or Disaronno, and I’m sure that’s where they got the idea for their hangover cake.
Today I’m going to share my Italian mother’s recipe for hangover cake, which we’ve been cooking for at least 20 years.

ITALIAN HANGOVER CAKE KEY INGREDIENTS
FOR THE CAKE:
All-Purpose Flour: All-purpose flour gives this cake structure and the right crumb texture.
Baking soda: This enables the cake to rise and develop a light, fluffy texture that makes it easier for it to absorb the delectable rum glaze.
Salt: The use of salt makes the flavors in this meal truly pop.
Eggs: 4 big eggs are required for this dish. Eggs add bulk to the cake and aid in its stability.
Granulated Sugar: In this recipe, we use granulated sugar since it gives the proper amount of sweetness and structure.
Canola Oil (or any neutral oil): You can use any neutral oil in this recipe, however we prefer canola oil.
Butter: In this recipe, the butter is melted and then chilled before being combined with the other ingredients.
Orange Juice: In a dessert where the orange is the star, fresh orange juice is always the finest option. This recipe calls for 6 oranges.
Orange Zest: To make this cake easier to make, zest your oranges before juicing them.
FOR THE GLAZE
Orange Juice: The orange juice in this glaze gives our Italian Hangover Cake a bright and sweet flavor that makes it so tasty and distinctive.
Rum (dark or light): Rum adds the “hair of the dog” to this hangover remedy. Dark or light rum will both work well.
Orange Zest: The orange zest adds a bright orange taste to the glaze, and the orange speckles add to the overall aesthetic.
Powdered sugar: This gives the glaze sweetness and substance. Powdered sugar is a requirement in this recipe.
IN THIS ITALIAN HANGOVER CAKE, WHAT CAN I SUBSTITUTE FOR DAIRY?
You can make this Italian hangover cake dairy-free by substituting another vegan/dairy-free butter of your choice for the butter.
You may also utilize coconut oil, but bear in mind that it would somewhat modify the texture.
WHAT SHOULD BE SERVED WITH ITALIAN HANGOVER CAKE?
This Italian hangover cake is delicious and simple, but it’s also delicious with ice cream or other toppings:
Vanilla ice cream – With a few simple, fresh ingredients, you can make a rich, creamy, and delectable homemade Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.
Walnuts, candied or unsweetened. I like candied, and they are easy to prepare. 1 cup of walnuts, ¼ cup granulated sugar, and 1 Tbsp butter. Place everything in a pan over medium heat and whisk regularly until the sugar is completely melted. On a piece of paper, separate the nuts. Once chilled, serve.
A delectable dessert that is sure to satisfy everyone is an Italian hangover cake. It will be a success at any event thanks to its creamy custard-like filling, crunchy topping, and distinctive flavor. Enjoy!
