Killyleagh welcomes you to a very special 350th Birthday Celebration!
Welcome to the Hans Sloane website where you can find out about one of Ulster’s most famous sons and discover the many celebrations that will soon be under way in his place of birth - the picturesque village of Killyleagh in Co Down, Northern Ireland.
“Sloane 350” is a group of Killyleagh residents who, with the support of Down District Council, the Killyleagh Development Association and Cadogan Estates, wish to celebrate the life and legacy of this great man and invite you to partake in an upcoming itinerary of wonderful events. Sir Hans Sloane, the man who gave the world milk/drinking chocolate and whose collection founded the British Museum will be honoured in spectacular fashion in Killyleagh from April to September 2010.
Everything from Libraries NI “Sloane Exhibitions” displaying the history and achievements of Sloane, with the library’s copy of Hans Sloane’s Will featuring on the BBC/British Museum “A History of the World” website to a fully costumed Sloane 350 Classical Concert in the church where he was baptised performed by The Hans Sloane Players including members of the Ulster Orchestra and guest vocalist Debra Stuart.
Other events include the Annual Sloane Lecture by Prof Nicky Clayton from Cambridge University entitled “Bird brains or brainy birds” examining animal intelligence, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory style children’s art competitions and prize giving, culminating in a lavish Chocolate Ball (dress code – chocolate!!) and Choc-tastic Chocolate Festival in the grounds of fairy tale Killyleagh castle.

Sir Hans Sloane was a major figure of 18th Century. He became a successful physician in London with the Royal Family and other eminent persons as his patients, and pursued a lifelong interest in natural history, amassing a vast collection that was the foundation of the British Museum.
